We are so excited to be able to offer bi-weekly online sessions for singers in grades 8 to 11 for the Fall term. Our sessions will be every other Thursday evening from 7:00-8:30 pm on Zoom, starting on Thurs Sept 17th.
Each bi-weekly session will include, but not be limited to, the following elements:
- Getting to know each other better/online social activities
- Vocal tech time and pedagogy – developing our voices individually and as a group
- Working on our sight singing and musicianship skills
- Learning new music & singing some familiar melodies
- Having fun with each other and the “new normal” under which we are operating
- Social “theme” or activity each week (eg: talent show, PJ party, etc)
Additionally, our choir has been accepted to be a part of the Bridge Choral Collective which will include a number of exciting Saturday morning workshops with renowned singers, educators, and choirs from across Canada and around the world!
The first Saturday Zoom collaboration is on Saturday, Sept 19th – featuring a workshop from a group of singers Zooming us from South Africa! Other Saturday sessions will feature prominent singers/musicians and composers teaching us new music and/or developing our creative compositional skills through the use of improvisation.
Here is the list of dates and times for the Bridge Choral Collective workshops:
– Sat Sept 19, 9:45-11:15am – with University of Pretoria Youth Choir, South Africa
– Sat Oct 3, 9:45-11:15am – with Sherryl Sewepagaham, Indigenous Canada
– Sat Nov 28, 9:45-11:15am – with Moira Smiley, USA
We will be joining several other choirs for these workshops, including our musical friends from the Coastal Sound Children’s & Youth Choirs in Coquitlam and the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir in Nova Scotia. We’re really excited to be collaborating with their music directors and singers as we prepare for this term and we know you will enjoy getting to know them in a couple of additional online sessions during the term. Dates for these sessions will be announced very soon.
And in case you don’t have enough online music in your lives, Frances is also offering some “extra” modules open to all of her six choirs. You are welcome to check these out and register for any that interest you. More information can be found at choral-music.com.
Before our first session on Thursday, Sept 17, each registered chorister will receive some resources via email to help them be prepared for our first session together. If you are uncertain if Online Choir is going to work for you or what it’s going to be like, you are invited to register for an initial trial period for the first week, which includes one regular Thursday night zoom as well as the first Zoom collaboration with the South African Choir on Saturday the 19th, for a cost of $20. This will give singers and families the chance to see what online sessions are all about. We definitely hope that you will stay beyond the first week, but this will give you the opportunity to give it a try before making the longer commitment.
And of course, we will continue to monitor public health advice and make preparations, so that we can return to in-person singing when it is deemed safe.
Cost for the Fall Term of singing is $200, including our bi-weekly sessions and all extra workshops. Following registration, an invoice will be sent to you by email, outlining payment options.
